Patriot Brew 1/3: All Gas, No Breaks

Patriots Stay Hot During Winter Break

Happy New Year Mason Nation! As most of the country slowed down over winter break, the Patriots continued to hit the gas peddle rolling right through the holidays!

While we were all opening presents and hanging with family & friends, the red-hot Green & Gold continued the basketball resurgence, piling up wins on the court.

What all is stirring in today’s Brew? Check it out!

🔺 Break? What Break? We Still Rollin. Sure, the Brew may have been on a break for the holidays, but the Patriots surely weren’t.

The men’s squad enjoyed the holiday break with wins over Tulane and North Carolina A&T to reach 11 non-conference wins for just the second time in the past 40 years.

Tonight, the Green & Gold ratchet it up with the beginning of Atlantic 10 play and a road date with the Explorers of La Salle, a team off to a bit of a surprising start at 9-4 on the season.

🔺 To The Wire. Conference play. There’s just nothing like it.

Mason women’s hoops team hit the road for the first time in conference play and battled to the wire, but fell in a back-and-forth battle with Rhode Island on Tuesday night, 70-68.

Veteran Sonia Smith continued her outstanding season with her third 20+ performance for the Patriots, but it wasn’t enough as the Rams connected on two late free-throws to pull out the narrow win.

🔺 Let’s Get It Started. A new season unfolds this week with not just a calendar turning, but the Mason men’s volleyball team kicks off their 2024 campaign.

The Patriots, who were picked to finish third in the 2024 EIVA Preseason Coaches Poll, behind only 2023 EIVA National Championship finalists Penn State and Princeton, get things started with a trip out west.

Mason is set to take on UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Northridge in a three-game in four day stretch to jump start its season.

The Puerto Rican international standout, Omar Hoyos and redshirt sophomore Liam French have been selected as the 2024 EIVA players to watch.

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: 2016.

The 94 points against North Carolina A&T marked the highest scoring output by a Patriot team since Mason dropped 97 on Longwood on Dec. 12, 2016 in Fairfax.
