Sure, the Hornets visited Fairfax this week, but all the buzz is about the Mason women’s lacrosse team, who is off to one of the best starts in program history!

🔺 All The Buzz. What a start to the 2024 season.

A stifling defensive effort and yet again a potent offensive display led the Mason women’s lacrosse team to a decisive 17-6 win over the visiting Hornets of Delaware State on Monday afternoon.

With the win, the Patriots have matched the combined win total of the past three seasons and head into conference play red-hot.

A goal by Kaitlyn Bestick just 36 seconds into the game really set the tone as the Green & Gold dominated from the opening whistle.

🔺 Pilin’ Up The Praise. It’s been a historic season already for the Mason women’s hoops program.

Before chasing an A-10 title, the Patriots added to that history with a run of yearly awards from the league office.

Graduate student Sonia Smith was tabbed as the Atlantic 10's Most Improved Player and was named to the Atlantic 10 First Team, marking the first First Team nod for Mason since 2019.

Sophomore Zahirah Walton was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year while also earning a spot on the Atlantic 10 Third Team and the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team. The major awards mark the first since Nicole Cardaño-Hillary was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year in 2019.

Rounding out the honors is Kennedy Harris, who picked up an Atlantic 10 All-Rookie nod.

🔺 A Special Honor. A scholarship is always special. But this one, this one hits different.

From 2004-2022, Becky Hartley not only served as the assistant track & field coach, but also several other roles on campus. She was a Patriot through and through and literally built the throwing program with Mason track & field from the ground up.

After her passing in October of 2022, a scholarship was established in her honor and this week, Bobby Kestyn, a graduate through on this year’s track & field squad was named the inaugural recipient of the Becky Hartley Memorial Scholarship.

A native of Fairfax, Kestyn is now on Mason's all-time list for five different disciplines: Indoor and outdoor shot put, discus, hammer, and weight throw.

🤔 PATRIOT TRIVIA

With yet another hat trick in Monday’s home win over Delaware State, Shannon Tuozzo continued her hot start to the 2024 spring season for the Mason women’s lacrosse team.

She has scored three or more goals in six of the Patriots’ seven games this season helping the Green & Gold to one of the best starts in program history.

With 27 goals already, where does Tuozzo rank nationally in total goals scored?
