🔼 Getting to Know You. We’ve got a lot of new faces in Fairfax this year, but we still have some of our foundational pieces that you already love to cheer on.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be highlighting some of the old and new and allowing you all as fans to get to know our guys a little better.

First up, our veterans Malik Henry and Ronald Polite III.

🔼 Dog Days Of Summer = Over. That’s right, summer is over (not for all of us, don’t worry).

Our Patriots are officially back in action as the women’s soccer team took the field yesterday for the first day of preseason in preparation for the start of their 2023 season.

The season kicks off on Thursday, Aug. 17th when Mason hosts longtime rival, Old Dominion in Fairfax at 6 p.m.

🔼 Where’s The Spot? Ok, so while our women’s soccer squad is getting on the field, our women’s hoops team is talking vacation spots.

Classes don’t start in Fairfax for another few weeks, so who’s up for heading to one of these spots for a few days?

Which Patriot do you agree with the most?

🔼 Historic Opportunity. Mason assistant coach Alyssa Whitehead’s name is already a part of the Jamaican history books.

This morning, that history could become even bigger with a monumental opportunity for the Jamaican Women’s National Team at the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

At 6 am this morning, Whitehead and Jamaica will take on one of the world’s perennial powers, Brazil (currently ranked #7 in the world), for a spot in the round of 16.

Prior to this year, Jamaica had never earned a point at a Women’s World Cup.

So far, the Reggae Girlz have a 1-0 win over Panama and a 0-0 tie with France. A win over Brazil would advance them in the tournament.

As part of the defensive coaching staff and in charge of the keepers, Whitehead’s unit has been spectacular, not allowing a goal in either of Jamaica’s games so far.

This morning’s game can be found on FoxSports.com.

🔼 Unforgettable Experience. The Summer of 2023 is one that rising senior Milan Pierre-Jerome will never forget.

Tuesday wrapped up the first-ever trip to the Women’s World Cup for Pierre-Jerome’s home country of Haiti.

The rising senior was a member of the national team and played against some of the world’s best.

Haiti dropped three tough decisions (1-0 to England, 1-0 to China, 2-0 to Denmark) at this year’s World Cup, but gained a ton of respect, playing every match close.

Pierre-Jerome became the first Patriot to participate in the World Cup since Kim Maslin-Kammerdeiner in 1991 with Team USA.

Whitehead isn’t the only Patriot that is a part of history for her country.

Games can be viewed on Fox Sports or Telemundo.

🔼 ICYMI…. A Legend Returns. For years, Justin Bour launched balls all over Fairfax.

He took that talent into a six-year MLB career. A career that could easily carry him into post-athlete life.

However, his commitment to a degree hold strong and he’s returned to Mason to finish what he started.

You don’t want to miss this feature on Bour’s return.

🌠 THE LEWIS ERA

The Dawn Of A New Era. July 1st officially started a new era of George Mason Athletics.

That was the day that Marvin Lewis, a former star collegiate student-athlete himself, officially took over the reins as the Athletic Director.

Energy, excitement and hard work are just some of what Marvin brings to the table. We can’t wait to see what the future has in store!

⭐️ PATRIOT COUNTDOWN: 15 DAYS

We are counting down the days to start of the 2023-2024 athletic calendar with some of the best moments, stars, and much more from Mason history.

She Knows What We’re Talking About. While she may not have been born or even thought of at the moment, rising sophomore Gabriella Gelfound definitely understand our previous “Color Me Badd” reference in today’s Brew.

How you might ask? Well on top of being a star on the court, the Lancaster, Calif. native is a fan of 80’s music.

Last fall, Gelfound earned Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team accolades with one of the most best freshman seasons in recent program history.

She appeared in all 29 matches, starting 26 of them and playing 106 sets. She ranked in the top-three in five major statistical categories, including first on the team in assists (497) and aces (31), second in digs (203) and third in kills (169) and blocks (58.0).

🤔 PATRIOT TRIVIA

Helping Hand. As we mentioned above, last fall, Gelfound ranked first on the team in assists with 497.

That was the highest total by a Patriot freshman since 2017, when a rookie dished out 587.

Who was that Mason rookie back in 2017?

Got a guess?

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: Emily Konchan.

Knochan dished out 587 assists in her debut season in Fairfax. She finished with 1,730 assists in her career that was cut short due to COVID.

She still ranks in the top-10 all-time in program history in career assists.

Let’s have a great Wednesday Patriots!
