Patriots Claim Slew of Golds During Busy Weekend
Good Morning Mason Nation. When it comes down to the final few days of a collegiate career, there’s only one thing left to do…..
While it was more like Saturday afternoon, that’s exactly what Joseph Queen did this past weekend on the track.
In today’s Brew, we’ll recap a busy weekend for the Patriots! Check it out below!
👟 Digging For Gold
🚣 Give ‘Em Gold
👏 Champion, On And Off The Field
⭐ And much, much more!

🔺 Digging For Gold. While some of their classmates were busy adjusting their tassels, grad students Joseph Queen and Bobby Kestyn added another accessory to their collection: gold medals.
The veteran duo claimed individual titles at this past weekend’s IC4A Championships, hosted in Fairfax.
Queen blitzed the track on Saturday for a personal best in the 800m and earned the victory, while Kestyn unleashed a throw in the discus on Sunday to claim the top spot.
Overall, the men’s squad finished second in the event, while the women finished fifth.
🔺 Row, Row, Row Their Boat. Joseph Queen wasn’t the only one picking up gold this weekend.
On one of the biggest rowing stages in the region, the Mason rowing squad put on a show, led by the Novice 4+ boat, who were champs at the Historic Dad Vail Regatta.
The boat swept all three of its races on the weekend, punctuated by Saturday's grand final victory.
After claiming wins in Friday's time trial and semifinal races, the Novice 4+ saved its best for last, rocketing off a weekend-best time by 33 seconds. The Patriots excelled on the water and finished nearly eight seconds ahead of second-place Jacksonville and almost 14 seconds ahead of third-place Georgetown.
🔺 Champion, On And Off The Field. On the field, Zoe Vozick was part of the 2023 historic championship for the softball program.
Off the field, Vozick was a champion in the classroom.
Recently, Vozick was named a 2024 School of Integrative Studies "Outstanding Student of the Year,” by the George Mason College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The award, which is nominated by the faculty of the School of Integrative Studies, is given to students "based on their academic achievement, extracurricular interests, research, civic and community involvement, equity and sustainability, and overall contribution to the Mason community."
The Basalt, Colo., native helped restart the George Mason chapter of the Food Recovery Network, a nonprofit rooted in college campuses across the country that collects fresh food that otherwise would have been thrown away and is donated back to its community to fight against both food waste and hunger. In the first four weeks of its reestablishment, Vozick and her team recovered 553.2 pounds of food, equivalent to 461 meals. As of spring of 2024, that total has jumped up to 864.71 pounds.
She will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in environmental and sustainability studies with a concentration in environmental justice, as well as a minor in Spanish.
