🔺 History Makers. This season, the George Mason women’s basketball program is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

The typical gift for a 50th anniversary is gold.

Well, that fits well because the Patriots are off to a golden start, matching a program record by improving to 5-0 with a 83-63 throttling of Robert Morris on Saturday afternoon.

Yet again, the Green & Gold put their balanced offensive on display with three in double-figures, led by freshman Kennedy Harris with 13 points. It was her third double-digit scoring performance of the year.

Senior Sonia Smith added 12 and has now scored in double-figures in every game this season, while sophomore Nekhu Mitchell added 10.

Mason outrebounded RMU by a tally of 40-30, while also forcing 17 turnovers, making it 15+ opponent turnovers in every game this season.

🔺 Ain’t No Sunshine. The Patriot Pressure was in full effect.

In fact, both defenses were in full effect in Mason’s opener at the Jacksonville Classic on Sunday.

The defensive struggle came down to the wire, but the Patriots just couldn’t get the baskets they needed and fell to the 49ers, 54-49.

Mason held Charlotte to just 37-percent from the field, but the Niners came up with enough stops on their own end to pull out the victory.

Sophomore Keyshawn Hall continued his tear, pouring in a team-best 18 points, eight rebounds and went 6-of-6 from the field.

Senior Darius Maddox added 13 points and a game-high three steals, while graduate forward Amari Kelly notched 11 points and six rebounds.

🔺 DJ, Turn Me Up! Growing up near Fairfax, there’s a little extra meaning to wearing the Green & Gold for D.J. McGee.

He’s putting all that extra meaning on display this season as the redshirt freshman is off to a historic 8-0 start, including a HUGE win over the weekend against Minnesota’s Michael Blockhaus, who is currently ranked #8 in the country.

McGee and his teammates earned a split over the weekend at the tri-dual meet, topping Morgan State (36-6), before falling to 14th-ranked Minnesota (37-6).

Campbell transfer Chad Nix also went 2-0 on the day for the Green & Gold.

🔺 Senior Salute. Abigail Murtaugh, Graham Boyle and Ian Castegnaro have spent hundreds of hours in the pool at the Aquatic Center in Fairfax.

On Saturday, they walked the deck for one of the final times in competition as the trio was honored for their dedication to the Green & Gold on the final day of the annual Patriot Invitational.

Both the men and women finished third amongst a talented field and had strong showings up and down the lineup as they continue preparation for the Atlantic 10 Championships in February.

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: 2000-01.

To start the 2000-01 campaign, the women’s hoops squad took down Morgan St. (71-48), Saint Francis (78-42), Portland St. (73-58), Ball State (78-54) and Georgetown (66-64).

A win on Wednesday against American would set a program record as the Patriots have never started 6-0 in their 50-year history.
