Patriot Brew 3/15: Just Getting Started

Skinn, Patriots Set Foundation For Years To Come

TGIF Mason Nation. From an early age, Dr. Seuss taught us life lessons that stay with us to this day like, “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.”

It was a year unlike any other for Mason hoops, literally.

43 combined wins. The most EVER by the two programs in the same season.

The future, well, you better get some sunglasses on, because it’s about to get even brighter.

What all do we have in today’s Brew? Check it out below!

📈 STOCK UP

🔺 Runnin’ Men. Nothing like a little mid-week outburst.

The Mason baseball team capped off a stellar homestand with an offensive bonanza, blowing past UM-Eastern Shore, 15-5, on Wednesday to improve to 8-1 at Spuhler Field this spring.

Senior Jordan Smith, sophomore Evan Blanchard and freshman Owen Hull each drove in three RBIs to pace the offense, while freshman Toby Hueber pitched the final four innings to earn his first collegiate win.

🔺 Just Getting Started. The future of Mason hoops was on full display at the A-10 Tournament.

Head Coach Tony Skinn ushered his squad back from a 12-point deficit to within three in the final minutes, but it wasn’t enough as the Patriots’ 20-win season came to an end at the hands of Saint Joseph’s on Wednesday at the Barclays Center.

Freshman sensation Baraka Okojie provided the spark en route to a career-high 22 points, along with six rebounds and three assists. 16 of his 22 points came in the second half as Mason mounted their comeback.

🔺 Young Gun. He only be a freshman, but JJ Powell is making a big impact on the Mason men’s golf team.

With three top-25 finishes already on his resume, Powell had already turned some heads.

But this past weekend, he took it up a notch, earning a top-10 finish at the fourth annual Donald Ross Collegiate Classic in Southern Pines, N.C.

He was one of only 14 players in the field to finish under par at the event.

🤔 PATRIOT TRIVIA

In Mason’s two victories this week, South Trimble has gone 5-for-7 with four runs scored and three RBIs.

He currently takes an 11-game hitting streak into this weekend’s series at North Carolina A&T.

He also needs just seven hits to join the 200-career hit club.
