Patriot Brew 7/12: What Happens in Vegas, Stays In Vegas?

Former Patriot, Miller, Showing Off in NBA Summer League

Good morning Patriots! Summer trips to Vegas aren’t usually talked about much. Well, at least publicly or around parents.

Except if you’re a former Patriot showing off his skills for his new job.

We’ve got that and much more in today’s edition of the Brew! Check it out!

🔼 Showtime in Vegas. A gem was found in a little town in Northwest Virginia, in the small town of Louden Valley.

In his three seasons at George Mason, Jordan Miller showed off his athleticism, versatility and skill. He played in 68 games, starting 65 of those contests and helping the Patriots to a 48-39 record during that stretch.

He amassed 886 points for an average of 13.0 ppg, while grabbing 405 rebounds (6.0 rpg) and swiping 67 steals. He earned All-Atlantic 10 accolades during his final season in Fairfax, before finishing his career at the University of Miami.

Now? He’s taking that skill that was discovered by Mason to the biggest stage, the NBA.

As a second round selection of the Los Angeles Clippers, Miller is part of their Summer League team and in two games is averaging 9.0 ppg, 3.5 rpg and 3.0 apg while playing 24 minutes a game.

🔼 A Truly Wordly (Cup) Experience. We are just over a week away from the start of the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

One of our own, Milan Pierre-Jerome, is right in the middle of the experience and will be putting her best foot forward against some of the most elite players in the world.

A rising senior for the Patriots, Pierre-Jerome was the team captain for Mason last fall and is a current member of the Haitian National Team, who will be a part of Group D in the upcoming World Cup tournament.

Milan and her teammates open up group stage play on July 22 against England, who is currently ranked fourth in the world. Games against China (July 28) and Denmark (August 1) follow with hopes for enough points to advance to the round of 16, which is set to begin on August 5.

For the Patriots this past season, she started all 18 games in the midfield and led the squad in assists with four.

That’s not the only thing Pierre-Jerome has been busy with since last fall.

This past April, she attended the NCAA Leadership Forum at NCAA Headquarters in Indianapolis, Ind. She was just one of two Atlantic 10 athletes to attend the event.

🔼 Academic Aces. Six Patriots (and many more) are putting the student in “student-athlete.”

We’ve talked about the success that so many Mason athletes had in the classroom this past year.

Jacquee Clabeaux (Women's Swimming & Diving), Maddy Baldwin (Rowing), Nicole Bechtel (Softball), Annabelle Eastman (W. Track & Field), Omar Hoyos (Men's Volleyball), and Rishab Sardana (Men's Tennis) earned the honor.

To qualify, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore with a minimum grade point average of 3.25. VaSID selected 220 student-athletes for All-Academic honors across 37 schools in Virginia.

🌠 THE LEWIS ERA

The Dawn Of A New Era. July 1st officially started a new era of George Mason Athletics.

That was the day that Marvin Lewis, a former star collegiate student-athlete himself, officially took over the reins as the Athletic Director.

Energy, excitement and hard work are just some of what Marvin brings to the table. We can’t wait to see what the future has in store!

🤔 PATRIOT TRIVIA

Best of the Best. The Mason’s women’s soccer team has a long history with the US National Team, dating back to 1983.

In total, 11 former Patriots spent time with the USWNT.

But Milan Pierre-Jerome is only the second Patriot to actually experience the World Cup (Women’s World Cup didn’t start until 1991).

Do you know the only other Mason women’s soccer alum to compete in the World Cup?

Think you got it?

⭐️ COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF: 36 DAYS

36 days ago. The improbable, unforgettable run by the Mason baseball team came to a conclusion leaving us with memories for a lifetime.

It will be a tougher to find a team that embodied “the heart of a champion” more than the 2023 Mason baseball team.

The Patriots scrapped and fought their way to a 2023 Atlantic 10 Championship and went on to win two games and earn a spot in a regional final for the first time EVER.

The only team to stop them in June? Just the top-ranked team in the country, Wake Forest, who would go on to advance to the College World Series.

Thanks for a spring we’ll talk about for years to come boys!

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: Kim Maslin-Kammerdeiner.

The former Patriot who was a star on the 1985 National Championship squad was a backup goalie for the 1991 US Women’s National team that won the first ever FIFA Women’s World Cup.

During her time in Fairfax, she piled 180 saves (sixth all-time), an .861 save percentage (second all-time) and a 0.74 goals against average (second all-time).

Happy Hump Day fellow Patriots!
