Patriot Brew 6/5: Never Zero

Today, we're celebrating a weekend filled with upsets.

Good morning! And if you’re still a little groggy from all the baseball this weekend, we don’t blame you. George Mason scored not one but two upsets over the weekend to triple the total number of NCAA Tournament victories this program has earned in its history.

What else are we mixing into today’s Brew?

🔼 Never Zero. George Mason was given a 1% chance of beating Northeastern. Then they were given a 1.8% chance of beating Maryland. The chances were low, but they were never zero… and the Patriots ended the weekend knocking both out of the postseason to make it as far as the NCAA Regional final this past weekend.

George Mason 11, Northeastern 3

Sophomore shortstop Carsen Pracht drove in a career-high five runs and sophomore starter Chad Gartland tossed a complete-game to lead the Patriots to an 11-3 victory over Northeastern in an elimination game. It would be their first NCAA Tournament win in over three decades and just the second in program history—and the 11 runs are the most the Patriots have ever scored in an NCAA Tournament game.

(But it wouldn’t be the last time this weekend they’d score 11 runs…)

George Mason 11, Maryland 10

Sophomore catcher Connor Dykstra drove in five runs and senior shortstop Brett Stallings knocked in the winning run to lead the Patriots to an 11-10 walk-off win over Maryland in the Winston-Salem NCAA Regional at David F. Couch Ballpark.

🔼 Driven Maddy. George Mason University rowing’s Maddy Baldwin has been named to the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team. The junior holds a perfect 4.0 GPA and is majoring in kinesiology, and as an accomplished member of Mason's Varsity 8+ she helped the Patriots show significant improvement throughout the season from the No. 7 seat.

Previous recipients of the A-10 All-Academic honor include Grace Moody (2021), Nicole Van Oort (2017, 2018) and Elizabeth Kearns (2016).
