🔼 Four Scored. George Mason saw four players earn spots on the Winston-Salem Regional All-Tournament Team after winning two games—which included upsets over Northeastern and Maryland, and securing a place in their first-ever regional final.

💪 Connor Dykstra was selected All-Tournament catcher after hitting a home run, knocking home five RBIs, and scoring two runs of his own over four games. Against No. 19 Maryland in an elimination game, he finished 2-for-4 with a three-run moon shot in the Patriots’ walk-off win.

🔥 Chad Gartland was selected All-Tournament Team starting pitcher after tossing a complete game with five strikeouts and two walks in the Patriots’ win over Northeastern in an elimination game.

🚀 Alex Knapp was selected All-Tournament outfielder, going 2-for-9 with four walks, five runs scored, and driving in a run over the four games.

🛡️ Owen Stewart was selected All-Tournament relief pitcher, allowing just two runs over 5.1 innings with four strikeouts in the Patriots’ walk-off win against Maryland.

🔼 Honor Roll. George Mason University men's golfer Milan Matneja has been named to the 2023 Atlantic 10 Men's Golf All-Academic Team after he earned a GPA of 4.00 while pursuing a master's degree in public health with a concentration in epidemiology.

The graduate student played his best collegiate golf down the stretch with three top 40 finishes, while boasting a 73.8 stroke average in the final three tournaments. A native of Fairfax, he led the Patriots with an 11th place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championship, the grad student's best finish, carding a four-over-par 220 (72-73-75).

🤔 PATRIOT TRIVIA

Reverse, reverse. We could probably spend an entire Brew breaking down new Director of Athletic Marvin Lewis’ favorite things (Heath bars as your favorite candy? Get this man a Reese’s cup!) but we’re sticking with his go-to game nights because UNO, billiards, and Scrabble would be a heck of an evening from an enjoyment standpoint and their potential to create chaos amongst participants.

Our question today—in what century was billiards invented? (Bonus points if you can name the country that popularized it!)

Think you got it? Scroll on down to the bottom of this email for the answer!

⭐ ONE BIG THING

“All coaches, administrators, and student-athletes at Mason should be so excited to have a person like Marvin Lewis leading the Mason team.”

That’s what former Georgia Tech men’s basketball head coach Josh Pastner said after Marvin Lewis was named the sixth Director of Athletics in George Mason’s history.

And while his experience and achievements as an athletic administrator are too many to count… he also led Georgia Tech to their first men’s basketball NCAA Championship game as a guard in 2004 and enjoys the occasional romantic comedy when he’s trying to wind down.

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: 14th century

Pool, more formally known as pocket billiards, is the general term for any number of games played with a cue stick on a six-pocket pool table, including eight-ball, nine-ball, and straight pool. The earliest recorded playing of a recognizable form of billiards was in France in the 1340s.

Have a good Friday and an even better weekend, y’all.
