Patriot Brew 9/25: Rhode Warriors

Mason Volleyball Off To Best Conference Start In 12 Years

Good Morning Mason Nation. The New England Area is beautiful this time of year.

It’s even nicer when you visit and come away with not one, but ✌️Ws and that’s exactly what our volleyball squad did this weekend.

Those two wins accomplished something that hadn’t been done since 2011, which at this point seems like centuries ago after these past few years, right?

What all is stirring in today’s Brew? Check it out!

🔼 Rhode To Victory. G and G & associates had quite a weekend in Kingston, Rhode Island.

Junior Ewelina Gacek and sophomore Gabriella Gelfound had standout performances to help the Mason volleyball team to a weekend sweep of URI and the best start in conference play since 2011.

In Friday’s 3-1 victory over the Rams, Gacek had eighth double-digit kill performance of the year with 14, while Gelfound nearly had a triple-double with 10 kills, 23 assists and nine digs.

On Saturday in another 3-1 win, the Green and Gold had a historic performance with the third-most service aces in program history. Gacek had seven herself, the third-most by any individual player in a single match in Patriot history. Junior Olyvia Kennedy had 11 kills and four aces.

🔼 Two-For-One Special. Nothing like a good weekend special, right?

The Mason swimming & diving teams opened up their 2023-24 campaign this weekend at the annual Potomac Relay Invitational, hosted by American University.

Both Green and Gold squads earned top-three finishes with the women’s team winning two events and an overall second-place finish, while the men’s squad also won two events and an overall third-place finish.

🔼 Going Global. The growth of the game of lacrosse over the past few decades is monumental.

The game has a huge following here in the States, but the international growth is something to be seen and it was evident recently as the Mason’s women’s lacrosse program hosted some friends from Keio University, a school in Japan, for a friendly scrimmage on Friday afternoon.

🤔 PATRIOT TRIVIA

Acing The Course. Junior Ewelina Gacek served up a performance for the ages. Yes, the pun was intended.

In Saturday’s 3-1 win at URI, Gacek pounded out seven service aces, the most in a single-match by any Patriot in over 20+ years.

All-time legend Aline Pereira and Amy Falk both had seven service aces in a single-match during conference play back in 2002.

That same year, in non-conference play, the current single-match program record for service aces was set with 10. Which Patriot still holds that record to this day?

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: Jesica Umansky.

After earning Regional Freshman Player of the Year honors in 2021, Umansky was just as dominant in her sophomore year, earning All-Region accolades again in a season in which she set the current record for service aces in a single-match.
