For Mason Nation, that Patriot Pressure is turning up diamonds all over the court in 2023-24 as the hoops squads ratcheted up the defense on their weekend opponents en route to a combined 12-1 start for the Green & Gold!

🔺 Pressure Makes Diamonds. For months now, Coach Skinn has talked about Patriot Pressure. He’s talked about the defensive side of the court.

Well, folks, if you haven’t listened yet, Saturday the Green & Gold put it on full display, stifling East Carolina to just 34.5-percent from the field and seven turnovers en route to a decisive 81-59 home victory at EagleBank Arena.

The Patriots never trailed in the contest and led for 38:36 of the 40 minutes.

With a 5-1 record, this year’s squad has tied the best start over the past 15 seasons.

Senior Darius Maddox led five Patriots in double-figures with a season-high 19 points, while sophomore Keyshawn Hall continued to flex his muscles with his fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Ronald Polite III (11 points), Jared Billups (10 points) and Woody Newton (10 points) also posted double-figures in the scoring column.

🔺 And Another One. On Wednesday, the Mason women’s basketball team made history with the first 6-0 start in program history.

Make that 7-0.

The Patriots continued their road swing with a dominant 70-38 victory at Coppin State on Sunday afternoon. Its the lowest opponent total since Nov. 16 of last year when Charleston Southern was held to just 34 points (a span of 33 games).

Mason never trailed in the game and had 11 different players find the scoring column, led by senior Sonia Smith, who once again found double-digits for the seventh time this season, scoring 10 points. Taylor Jameson and Zahirah Walton were just behind her with nine points each.

🔺 Chart Climber. Move over T-Swift, we’ve got a chart climber of our own here in Fairfax.

In her first season with the Patriots, Ruju Chauhan has made an immediate impact.

After transferring in from Prairie View A&M, the grad student went 7-1 and won two tournaments to earn a #116 ranking in the final ITA fall poll released last week.

🔺 Oui Oui. It’s been seven years since Shevon Thompson dominated opponents at EagleBank Arena.

It may be a new location, but Thompson’s still doing his thing on the court as the former Patriot star took home Player of the Week honors after a 19-point, 10-rebound performance for Nancy in the French Professional league.

He currently leads the lead in rebounding at 9.1 per game and is fourth in scoring with 16 ppg.
