Patriot Brew 3/22: Patriot Proud

Women's Hoops Takes #1 Seed Penn State To The Wire

TGIF Patriots. This University has sponsored both a men’s and women’s basketball team for 50 years.

There has NEVER been a George Mason basketball season like 2023-24. The most combined wins EVER.

Last night, the Patriots walked off the court for the final time this year and those heads should be held high.

What a season for the Green & Gold.

We’ll recap it and so much more! Check it out below!

📈 STOCK UP

🔺 Patriot Proud. One things is for sure. The Patriots were ready for their fight in the Lions Den.

Mason gave top-seeded Penn State all they could handle, forcing the Lady Lions into overtime, but ultimately dropped an incredibly hard-fought 84-80 decision in the first round of the inaugural WBIT.

Junior Paula Suárez and sophomore Zahirah Walton both scored 24 points apiece to lead the offensive attack, while junior Ta'Viyanna Habib finished with 16 points. Senior Sonia Smith wrapped up her Patriot career with another double-digit performance, pouring in 13 points in her final collegiate game.

After PSU grabbed an early lead, Mason took over late in the first quarter and went on to hold a late seven-point lead with just under five minutes to play in regulation. The Lady Lions responded down the stretch to tie the game in the final seconds and force OT.

🔺 Tiger Tamers. Four batters into Wednesday’s matchup at Towson, the Mason softball squad had already grabbed a 1-0 lead.

It was just the beginning as the Patriots went on to score seven two-out runs in the first inning to take a command early en route to a 12-4, five-inning defeat of the Tigers in non-conference action.

Rachel Warrens and Emily Lampela both had multi-hit days to lead the nine hit attack, with Lampela adding three RBIs and three runs scored on the day.

🔺 Doublin’ Up. One outdoor performance. Two weekly honors. Not too shabby if we say so ourselves.

The Atlantic 10 recognized two Mason athletes this week with Amber Askelson taking home the Field Performer of the Week, while Albert Asare was named the Track Performer of the Week.

Both Patriots had strong showing in the Green & Gold’s outdoor debut last weekend at the UCF meet in Orlando.
