Men's Volleyball Garners Slew Of Conference Accolades

And one think is clear. The Mason men’s volleyball team definitely earned it this spring.

Their record-setting season earned conference recognition this week, plus another Patriot is set to run it back next year.

👏 RAISING THE BAR

For Mason Athletics, its been a record-setting season in
many ways on the field, court, track, and any competitive surface.

While the Patriots are on the rise in against their opponents, Mason Nation is on the rise as well, raising the bar once again during this year’s eighth
annual Vision Day earlier this month.

George Mason Athletics had more than 900 unique donors contribute a record $467,000 to ensure the success of Patriots' student-athletes and enhance their experience on campus. That's an increase of more than $50,000 the dollar amount from 2023, as Mason Athletics had 565 donors and raised $416,690 on last year's Giving Day.  
 
"We are grateful and sincerely appreciative of all of the support and generosity of our fans, donors, staff and campus community to make Mason Vision Day a great success," said Assistant Vice President, Director of Athletics Marvin Lewis. "It was truly a team effort and a perfect illustration of the community's commitment to our 500-plus student-athletes who proudly wear Green & Gold and continue to be outstanding ambassadors of our university."

🔺 Praisin’ The Patriots. When you put together one of the best seasons in recent program history, awards tend to pile up.

That’s the case for the nationally-ranked men’s volleyball squad who garnered plenty of praise in the EIVA Yearly awards announced this week.

Senior outside hitter, Omar Hoyos, has been named to the First Team for the first time in his career. Jack Bolz and Paul Wyszynski were named onto the Second Team and Troy McDonald, Colin Heath, and Sam Peters were the honorable mentions for this year. 
 
The EIVA All-Academic Team included Jason Ashenfelter (3.76 GPA/Criminology, Law and Society), Hayden Karpinski (3.38 GPA/Business Management), Paul Russell (3.64 GPA/Cyber Security Engineering), Colin Heath (3.61 GPA/Business Management), Sam Peters (3.91 GPA/Conflict Analysis & Resolution), Omar Hoyos (3.77 GPA/Communications), Georgi Zahariev (4.00 GPA/Computer Science), and Jack Bolz (3.91 GPA/Curriculum and Education). 

🔺 Runnin’ It Back. Add another to the list.

First it was Jared Billups and Darius Maddox. Now, Woody Newton is joining that list as the Oklahoma State transfer is set to return to the Patriots next season.

Newton was one of just three members of last year’s team to appear in all 32 games for the Green & Gold. He averaged just shy of 20 minutes a game, scoring 5.8 points per game, 3.9 rebounds and nearly a steal a game.

🔺 Deehan? More Like Defense. In the midst of its best season in five years, the Mason women’s lacrosse team is ready to make some more noise.

Among the veterans leading the upstart Patriots is grad student Meghan Deehan, who has been a critical part of the Green & Gold’s defensive efforts this spring.

For the second time this season, the Milton, Ga. native was named Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week, helping Mason grab a critical conference win this past weekend over St. Bonaventure.
