Patriot Brew 9/18: Running Wild

Mason XC Shows Out Over The Weekend

Good Monday Morning. As the great Forrest Gump said, “One day, I just felt like running.”

We’re not sure if that was the the conversation for the Mason cross country squads, but their performances this past weekend was worthy of Forrest Gump type accolades.

They weren’t the only ones in action with five other Green & Gold squads laying it on the line.

🔼 Running Wild. It was a perfect weekend to go for a run.

And the Mason cross country teams did that and then some with both squads finishing in the top-two at the CNU Invitational, including a victory for the men’s squad amongst a 12-team field.

🔼 Holding Court. Another weekend. Another standout performance.

The Patriots went 16-14 overall in singles and 8-7 in doubles.

Junior Niza Simunyola, sophomore Zavan Fahim and senior Hayden Postin combined to go a perfect 9-0 on the weekend. Postin is now a perfect 6-0 this fall.

🔼 Bounc Back. Mason’s men’s soccer squad was unbeaten in three straight heading into A-10, but momentum only goes so far as the Patriots faced red-hot Davidson College, who used an early goal to grab the lead and hold on for the 2-0 defeat of the Green & Gold.

The Patriots will look to bounce back next Saturday when they travel to St. Bonaventure when they face their first true conference road test of the season .

🔼 Wrapping It Up. Mason’s volleyball squad wrapped up its non-conference slate with three tough matches at the Patriot Invite, dropping a 3-1 decision to Albany and two 3-2 decisions, one to MTSU and one to Seattle.

Freshman Caroline Rodriguez had a breakout weekend, pounding out 49 kills in the three matches and hitting at a tremendous .414 clip.

The Patriots open up their A-10 schedule this upcoming weekend at Rhode Island.

🔼 Bounce Back Time. The Mason women’s soccer team fell at home on Sunday to longtime rival, VCU, 5-0. The Rams used a second half outburst to pull away from the Patriots after it being a one-goal game for 60+ minutes.

The Green and Gold will look to bounce back against another old rival, the University of Richmond, on Thursday in the capitol city at 4:30 p.m.

🤔 PATRIOT TRIVIA

On The Cusp. Before we know it, the Patriots will be taking the court at EagleBank Arena again.

Today marks just 49 days from the season opener for the men’s and women’s basketball squads.

Senior Sonia Smith will be looking to lead the Patriots women’s team against a tough A-10 stable of teams. The veteran enters the 2023-24 season on the cusp of history as she has scored 989 points in her four collegiate seasons (three at Sacred Heart, one at Mason). She needs just 11 points to reach 1,000 collegiate points.

How many Patriots have reached 1,000 career points for the women’s basketball program?

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: 20.

Kathy Kleha was the first in program history to eclipse 1,000 career points back in 1980 and since then 19 other members joined the club.

Keri Chaconas (above) was atop that list for 24 seasons with 1,747 points, before Nicole Cardaño-Hillary broke it back in 2020 (1,766).

Cardaño-Hillary’s teammate Jacy Bolton was the last Patriot to reach the mark, scoring her 1,000th career point during the 2019-20 season.
