🔼 Soft Served. First time, long time… but certainly not the last time. George Mason softball beat Loyola Chicago in extra innings of the final game to win its first Atlantic 10 Tournament in program history.
But before we get into the highlights, four Patriots won All-Championship honors to go alongside their trophy—Carly Cooper, Maddy Myers, Haley Taormina, and Aly Rayle were named for their exceptional performances this tournament.
Game 1: After a wild pitch in the first inning scored one for Loyola Chicago, Aly Rayle would go on to retire the next 19 batters in a row and send the games to extra innings. The Patriots took the lead after Maddy Myers hit an RBI double to right center, scoring Nicole Bechtel all the way from first. The Patriots would lead 2-1 going to the bottom half of the inning, but the Ramblers were able to walk-off the Patriots and force a winner-take-all showdown.
Game 2: The Patriots and Ramblers once again fought through extra innings. Tied 3-3 in the top of the 10th inning, Nicole Bechtel hit a two-run, bases-clearing double and Elyssa DeRosa then tacked on one more run to extend the Patriot lead to 6-3. And then it was Aly Rayle and the Patriot defense closing out the final half of the tenth inning to solidify Mason's first ever conference championship.
George Mason is heading to Durham, North Carolina to face off against No. 8 Duke in the regional round of the NCAA Division I Softball Tournament on Friday, May 19. The regional games will be played at Duke Softball Stadium alongside Campbell and Charlotte.
🔼 How Sweep It Is. Not to be outdone on the weekend, George Mason completed a three-game sweep over George Washington with a 9-5 win yesterday afternoon at Barcroft Park in Arlington, Virginia. The Patriots have won five straight games and 10 of their last 13. Sophomore Reece Woody led the way with four hits, drove in a pair of runs, and scored three runs.
