🔺 And The Award Goes To…. It’s always one of the best nights of the athletic calendar, and it has nothing to do with any games or competitions.
This week, the annual Green & Gold Awards brought together student-athletes, coaches and department staff for a night of celebration, achievement and some fun.
Awards bestowed upon the Patriots on Monday included the Aimee Willard Commemorative Award, Susan Collins Leadership for Women in Sport Award, President's Cup, Dr. Pettrone Student-Athlete of the Year and a series of other awards which honor athletic excellence in a variety of categories.
🔺 King Of The Georges. Earlier this spring, the Mason baseball team took two-of-three from local rival, George Washington.
This week, the Patriots completed the “Sweep of the Georges” (unofficial name) with a dominant 13-2 victory over Georgetown on Wednesday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
Leading the way were senior Jordan Smith, who drove in four runs, and sophomore starter Connor Knox, who tossed four innings of one-hit ball.
Knox retired the first 10 batters he faced in the game and allowed just three baserunners in his second start of the season before turning the game over to the bullpen.
Smith went 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Junior Reece Woody was 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored, while sophomore James Quinn-Irons finished 3-for-5 with a double, RBI and scored a run.
🔺 And Another One. It’s a hot spot, folks.
Coach Skinn and the Mason men’s hoops program welcomed its fourth transfer addition, welcoming UMass Lowell guard Brayden O’Connor to Mason Nation for the 2024-25 season.
O'Connor started all 33 games for the Riverhawks in 2023-24 while averaging career highs in scoring (9.9 ppg), 3pt percentage (.357), assists (2.3 apg), rebounds (3.8 rpg) and steals (0.9 spg).
O'Connor is the fourth transfer portal addition for the Patriots so far this season. The Green & Gold also will bring in former Siena forward Giovanni Emejuru, former Iona guard Jeremiah Quigley and former Auburn guard K.D. Johnson. In addition, the Patriots will welcome incoming freshmen Justin Begg (Houston, Texas) and Bryson Cokley (Whiteville, N.C.).
🔺 Three’s Company. The special spring for Mason lacrosse continues.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Patriots earned the most A-10 honors in single season since 2021 as three of their stars earned spots on the Atlantic 10 Conference squads.
Graduate student Shannon Tuozzo (First Team), Daniella Jimenez (Rookie Team) and graduate student Morgan Gunn (Academic Team) all earned postseason honors for the first time in their respective careers.
⭐️ A NEW ERA
A new era is officially here for our beloved University and Athletics department.
Last week, George Mason University unveiled a completely redesigned logo as the capstone of its three-year-long comprehensive rebrand. The new look, which will include a single logo for the university and its athletics program, asserts George Mason’s emerging identity as a national top 50 public university and Virginia’s top-ranked university for innovation and upward mobility, as well as the commonwealth’s largest, most innovative, and most diverse university.
The ongoing rebrand signals George Mason’s convention-defying rise to become a leading national public research university by expanding access to excellence through an unwavering commitment to inclusive innovation. The rebrand rollout began in 2021, with preparations to mark 50 years of George Mason as a university in 2022 with updated brand narrative that proclaims the university’s distinct approach to education as All Together Different.
