Patriot Brew 5/6: Medaling Up

Patriots Pile Up 17 Medals at A-10 Championships

Good Morning Patriots. It may not have been the prettiest of weekends outside, but the Patriots sure made the most of it.

With only a few weeks left in the 2023-24 athletic calendar, the Green & Gold are still piling up the accolades.

We’ll recap it all and much more in today’s Brew! Check it out below!

⭐ And much, much more!

📈 STOCK UP

🔺 Medaling Up. Sweet Seventeen.

That’s exactly what the Mason track & field squads piled up over the weekend, garnering 17 medals at the 2024 Atlantic 10 Track & Field Championships.

The Patriots took home five golds, seven silvers and five bronze en route to a second place finish on the men’s side and fourth place on the women’s.

Highlighting the weekend were the performances of Bobby Kestyn and Joziah Johnson. Kestyn added to his legacy, being named the Men's Most Outstanding Field Performer after he captured a bronze medal in the hammer throw and the gold in the discus. Johnson followed suit, also earning a major award as he was named the Most Outstanding Rookie Performer with the gold medal that he earned at the men's 400m hurdles.

🔺 A Lasting Legacy. Last week at the Green & Gold awards, there were many honors handed. Performances, seasons, championships - all were recognized and celebrated.

But there was one award that was far more than just on field accomplishments. It was about a lasting legacy.

Junior midfielder Lauren Distad of the Mason women’s lacrosse team was the recipient of the 2024 Aimee Willard Commemorative Award.

This award is given to a student-athlete who embodies Aimee's legacy and who mirror the standards of quality set by Aimee in her two-sport career: intensity, consistency of purpose, achievement, and teamwork.

🔺 Finishing Strong. Now that’s how you finish!

The Mason softball squad went on the road this weekend and won their fourth consecutive weekend series to close out the 2024 campaign. With their two wins at Rhode Island, the Patriots earned their third straight 20+ win campaign.

Battling their way through the weekend, the Patriots won the opener in Kingston, 3-1 in extra innings and closed out the season with a 3-2 victory to take the series and earn the 20 win season.

⭐️ A NEW ERA

A new era is officially here for our beloved University and Athletics department.

Last month, George Mason University unveiled a completely redesigned logo as the capstone of its three-year-long comprehensive rebrand. The new look, which will include a single logo for the university and its athletics program, asserts George Mason’s emerging identity as a national top 50 public university and Virginia’s top-ranked university for innovation and upward mobility, as well as the commonwealth’s largest, most innovative, and most diverse university.

The ongoing rebrand signals George Mason’s convention-defying rise to become a leading national public research university by expanding access to excellence through an unwavering commitment to inclusive innovation. The rebrand rollout began in 2021, with preparations to mark 50 years of George Mason as a university in 2022 with updated brand narrative that proclaims the university’s distinct approach to education as All Together Different.
