Patriot Brew 5/1: Three Cheers

Today, we're pretty sure softball is still hittin' dingers out of the park.

Good morning! Thing that will take 30 seconds this morning—remembering where you left your keys and wallet last night, getting that first pot of coffee brewing in the morning, and showing some love to George Mason softball for breaking the program’s single-season record for home runs this season.

Give ‘em an early morning retweet and start your Monday off right.

What else are we throwing into today’s Brew?

🔼 Split Decision. This weekend’s George Mason baseball series against Richmond was cancelled just before the Game 3 rubber match because of inclement weather (thanks a lot, Mother Nature) after splitting the first two games of the series.

Game 1 ended in a 4-3 win for George Mason but it began with an early deficit as the Patriots fell behind the Spiders in the top of the second, but ace Ben Shields followed it up with three scoreless innings from the mound through the fifth. The Patriots took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth with three runs on five hits, including a moon shot of a home run by sophomore Reece Woody over the right field fence.

But give Richmond credit for taking it down to the wire and loading up the bases with two outs and the winning run on second before fouling out to end the game.

Game 2 was a pitchers’ duel to start with redshirt freshman Konner Eaton going scoreless from the mound through four innings before the Spiders took the lead in the top of the fifth and never looked back on the way to a 7-0 win over the Patriots.

George Mason is back on the diamond against Navy this Wednesday with first pitch scheduled for 5:00pm ET in Annapolis, Maryland.

🔼 Looking Forward. George Mason softball dropped their final game of the weekend to Saint Louis yesterday in the series finale, losing 9-1 by Run Rule Victory to suffer their first conference sweep of the season. The Patriots will will finish the season at home this Friday and Saturday with a three-game series against UMass. Friday's doubleheader will start at 3:00pm ET and Saturday's finale will start at 12:00pm ET. Saturday's game will also be Mason's Senior Day, Alumni Day, and Bark at the Park. Look for more info on that soon.

🔼 Teeing Off. George Mason men’s golf played through blustery conditions this weekend to finish eighth at the Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship, with sixth through eighth places separated by just three strokes—Rhode Island placed sixth with a 904, followed by Dayton in seventh with a 906, and Mason one stroke back at 907. Milan Matneja led the Patriots with an 11th place finish, the grad student's best finish at an Atlantic 10 Championship. He carded a four-over-par 220 (72-73-75), and junior Colin Slater finished in the top 25 with a three-round 227 (71-76-80).

🔼 Three Cheers. George Mason rowing saw things fall into place this weekend during a tremendous day of racing across the board at the Gifford Pinchot Sprint Regatta as they row, row, rowed their place to all three boats posting top-3 finishes in their respective events. Mason's Varsity 4+ earned the silver medal in its race, placing second overall in 8:07. That pushed the Patriots ahead of five teams in its competition. That's stellar racing leading into the biggest regatta of the season on May 12.
