Today, we hope you're having a happy, restful Memorial Day.
Good morning! And Happy Memorial Day. To all the families, friends, and soldiers who have dealt with loss, we support you and thank you for being strong. On a day that's usually spent with joy, we do not forget the sacrifices that have made it possible.
Today’s Brew will be short because we know you’re (hopefully) busy today being not busy. Think of it as a single shot of the Brew.
⚾ We are the champions

🔼 We Are The Champions. George Mason team claimed the 2023 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship with a 6-2 victory of fourth-seeded Saint Louis this weekend at The Diamond in Richmond, Virginia. It’s the second A-10 title in program history—the Patriots also won in 2014 when they first joined the conference.
Two Mason freshman pitchers shined under the championship game spotlight. Starter Logan Rumberg tossed four strong innings and allowed two runs while reliever Owen Stewart pitched five innings of two-hit ball to earn the win.
⚾ How The Game Was Won:
George Mason took the lead against Saint Louis sophomore starter Jackson Holmes in the top of the first inning when senior designated hitter South Trimble led off with a single up the middle and junior right fielder Derek Wood reached on a fielder's choice. Junior center fielder Jordan Smith then doubled into the gap in right-center to drive in the first run of the game.
After going down 2-1 over the next few innings, the Patriots would go on to score the final five runs of the game, while keeping the Billikens off the scoreboard over the final five innings. George Mason sent eight batters to the plate in the top of the sixth and scored a pair of runs to take a 3-2 lead. With one out, Jordan Smith reached on an error and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore catcher Connor Dykstra. Sophomore first baseman Reece Woody delivered with a RBI-single to tie the game 2-2.
Senior second baseman Brett Stallings would reach on the third Billikens error of the inning, with Reece Woody racing home to vault the Patriots back into the lead for good at 3-2. The Patriots then tacked on three more insurance runs to finish at the final 6-2 score.
⏩ Up Next For The Patriots:
Thanks to the conference title, George Mason punched their ticket to NCAA Regionals. They’ll find out where they’ll play next at 12:00pm ET when the NCAA college baseball selection show is broadcast on ESPN2.
